More Web UI Techniques Your Users Will Love —
Improved Site Navigation and Error Prevention
by Edward Castelli

from THE VIEW, March/April 2003, Volume 9, Issue 2

Following the author’s earlier article on building user-friendly error messages (July/August 2002), this article presents a
fresh assortment of Web UI techniques that users love. Learn how to create a stationary action bar above a scrolling area for the body of the document. See how you can return users to their place in a scrollable area after a Save (or any other action that causes the page to reload). Alert users when a process is underway with a processing indicator — you’ll discover how easy it is to add a little animation, change the status message as a process advances, or change the user’s pointer to a wait-state indicator (an hourglass, for example). Learn how to cancel user clicks that are made before a process is completed or a page is loaded. Sample code is included in the demonstration database, which you can download from THE VIEW Web site.
