When most people hear “enterprise integration application,” they think of something like a workflow application, where a document originates in a Notes or Domino application and ultimately moves to the enterprise’s legacy application for further processing or archival. Using Domino agent technology, however, it’s possible to create a Notes or Domino workflow application that is triggered by an event on a legacy system. This article demonstrates the development of just such an enterprise application and introduces the connectivity tools that make it possible — ODBC (Open Database Connectivity), the multiplatform industry standard for accessing relational data, and the LS:DO (LotusScript:Data Object), which provides simple LotusScript calls to ODBC interfaces. Step by step, you’ll see how to use these tools to build a Notes/Domino application that accesses a relational database.
